WorkCover Release: Changes to asbestos laws

The NSW Government is improving the safety of workers and the public from unsafe exposure to asbestos.

The amendments will reduce the limits for when a WorkCover license is required to remove or demolish bonded asbestos. The changes will be implemented in two stages:

  • From 1 July 2007 the existing limit will be reduced from 200 square metres to 50 square metres or more of bonded asbestos.
  • From 1 January 2008 a further reduction for 50 square metres to 10 square metres or more of bonded asbestos.

Applicants for a licence will be required to undertake appropriate training at a TAFE college or a registered training organisation and must have experience in asbestos removal or demolition. They must be at least 18 years of age and assessed by Work Cover as ‘a fit and proper person’.

Application forms are available from the Work Cover Assistance Service (phone 13 10 50), from the Work Cover web site and regional offices, and from accredited training organisations.
